The maker
From Ashburton to Kitty Hawk.
Walter Ashford started the company in 1934 in a converted family laundry in Christchurch, making kitset furniture before turning to spinning wheels. His son Richard joined in 1972, took the wheels and looms to export markets and designed the Ashburton factory, while Richard's wife Elizabeth began The Wheel magazine in 1987.
